The Black Bay collection was introduced as a tribute to Tudor's iconic diving watches from the 1950s and was launched shortly after the brand underwent a major reboot around 2010.

Since then, this ever-growing series has expanded to include an array of vintage-inspired dive and sports watches, from chronographs to GMTs.

The Black Bay Pro made its debut at Watches & Wonders 2022 and was understandably compared to the similar, long-running Explorer model manufactured by Tudor’s sister brand, Rolex.

Like the Explorer, the Black Bay Pro boasts an orange-coloured additional hour hand that reads off a 24-hour fixed bezel. This can be used to provide an additional time zone or as an AM/PM indicator to let the wearer know whether it’s, for example, 10 o’clock in the morning or the evening.

Indeed, the Rolex Explorer was initially conceived as a tool-watch for just this purpose, with the targeted wearer being spelunkers—or cavers—who needed to know whether it was night or day when they were deep underground.

Aesthetically, the Black Bay Pro takes many of its design cues from the original Explorer, the reference 1655, now considered a 1970s vintage classic. As well as an orange additional hour hand, the Black Bay Pro features a black dial, a date window at 3 o’clock and an austere plain steel fixed bezel. Side by side, the two models look remarkably similar and have the same 39mm case size. This being a Black Bay, the standard hour hand is the signature “snowflake” design, which first appeared on a Tudor watch in 1969.

However, the Black Bay Pro does not have crown guards and its sapphire crystal is tougher than that of the Explorer’s plexiglass, safeguarding the dial from potential damage and promising longevity. It’s water-resistant up to 200 metres, therefore accommodating professional divers and water sports enthusiasts.

The Tudor Black Bay Pro is driven by the self-winding mechanical movement, Calibre MT5652, developed by Tudor. This COSC-certified chronometer movement provides the watch with remarkable precision and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, ensuring reliable timekeeping for extended periods. It is the same movement that powers Tudor’s Black Bay GMT watches.

It comes with one of two straps—hybrid rubber and leather, or a NATO-style fabric strap. Alternatively, you can get it on a stainless-steel Oyster-style three-link bracelet with folding clasp and fliplock.
